TourismThe Charlotte Coastal Region enjoys a vibrant tourism sector based on access to the Bay of Fundy and the history of the region. Located on the southern portion of Maine’s eastern border, the Charlotte Coastal Region is where tourists driving to Atlantic Canada enter the country. In addition, many tourists coming by car to Atlantic Canada from Ontario and Quebec also enter Atlantic Canada through the Charlotte Coastal Region. Approximately 1.1 million cars per year enter Canada at the St. Stephen and Milltown border crossings.The Bay of Fundy is an eco-attraction like no other. It literally teems with an abundance of diverse and enchanting marine wildlife. The Charlotte Coastal Region offers the best whale watching opportunities on the eastern side of North America. In addition, there are exquisite salt marshes, geological formations, sandstone sea coves, sandy beaches, the highest tides in the world and cooling summer breezes that have attracted visitors to the area for well over 100 years. The Charlotte Coastal Region has over 1,000 bedrooms, which is the forth largest concentration of accommodations in the province after the cities of Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton. Types of accommodations range from high-end resort to mid market motel, with a wide selection of bed and breakfast and rustic cottages located on the shore of the Bay of Fundy. In addition to the roofed accommodations, both private and provincially operated, campgrounds offer camping and RV opportunities. In addition to its accommodation infrastructure, the Charlotte Coastal Region has a range of dining experiences from takeout to family dining, to fine dining boasting some of the best culinary experiences in the province. From a tourism attraction perspective, besides the beauty of the coastal environment and the Bay of Fundy, the Charlotte Coastal Region has two Class A tourist attractions – the Kingsbrae Garden and the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. These are supported by a number of small museums, historic buildings and lighthouses. The region also has a number of art galleries and specialized shops, as well as numerous adventure tour operators. As well, a number of golf courses with especially scenic vistas are operated in the region. The Charlotte Coastal Region tourism sector is seasonal, but on a seasonal basis provides significant employment opportunities. |
