St. Andrews

Founded in 1783 by the United Empire Loyalists from Maine, St. Andrews is one of Canada’s oldest towns. In the late 1800’s, hotels were built and amenities added to make St. Andrews-by-the-Sea the first choice in Canadian resorts. Today, St. Andrews offers all the features of a thriving modern resort, yet its streets remain steeped in turn of the century charm. St. Andrews is a small town with a population of 1,798 (2006 Census). It is quite cosmopolitan as a result of its well-educated workforce and concentration of well-to-do retirees. St. Andrews, in keeping with its resort status, offers some of the best cuisine found in New Brunswick, unique gift shops, art galleries and a range of cultural activities.

Major elements in the St. Andrews’ economy are ocean research and tourism. St. Andrews is home to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Biological Station, the Huntsman Marine Science Centre and the Atlantic Salmon Federation.

Tourism accommodation includes the historic Fairmont Algonquin Resort; a jewel in the tourism crown of the Charlotte Coastal Region, as well as a host of accommodations from quaint bed and breakfast operations to historic inns, and shoreline cabins and cottages. A campground is located on the shore of Passamaquoddy Bay within walking distance from the National Historic District in the centre of town and the award winning 27-acre floral masterpiece at the Kingsbrae Gardens. In fact, you can pretty well walk everywhere in St. Andrews from the majority of accommodations to the major attractions including the town wharf, the Day Adventure Centre and the Historic Blockhouse, which is a national historic site.

Housing in the St. Andrews area is generally in the mid to upper-end market. St. Andrews real estate is higher priced than in other areas of the Charlotte Coastal Region but is very competitive with prices found in Canadian cities.

Period architecture adds to the atmosphere of safe, tree-lined gentile neighborhoods. Many of Canada’s most prominent entrepreneurs have and presently call St. Andrews home.

St. Andrews has the Vincent Massey Elementary School accommodating about 185 students from kindergarten to Grade 6. Students then move to the Sir James Dunn Academy, which serves approximately 200 students from grades 7 to 12. St. Andrews also is home to the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) St. Andrews campus. The NBCC St. Andrews campus is home to approximately 400 full-time students pursuing post secondary diplomas in three main areas of focus: Business Information Technology, Trades and Aquaculture, and Tourism Management.

The St. Andrews Health Centre has three physicians, two dentists, a physiotherapist and a dietician. In addition, St. Andrews residents are served by the Charlotte County Hospital in St. Stephen, about a 20-minute drive. This hospital provides 24-hour emergency service, 44 beds for inpatients, and services in family medicine, surgery, pediatrics, gynecology, restorative health and palliative care, as well as oncology outreach services allowing patients to receive second and subsequent chemotherapy treatments.

The Atlantic Health Science Centre, located in Saint John, about one hour from St. Andrews, is the largest medical centre in New Brunswick and provides a full range of medical services. St. Andrews has a 60-bed nursing home located in the town.

St. Andrews offers hiking trails, kayaking and biking opportunities. In addition, the town offers a curling rink, a hockey arena, playing fields, a spa, an aquarium, a movie theatre, an arts centre and a world class 18-hole golf course. Playgrounds and parks complete the package, offering lots to do for both young and old.

St. Andrews has a bank, supermarket, convenience store, a number of restaurants offering family fare to fine dining opportunities, a couple of pubs and a drugstore. In addition, the town has a number of unique clothing boutiques, gift shops, craft and art galleries and a New Brunswick Liquor Corporation store.

The town boasts seven churches providing ministry and pastoral services for most of the major religions.

The Town of St. Andrews provides water and sewerage services to town residents.

St. Andrews has a full-time ambulance service, as well as a fire department staffed by both paid and volunteer firefighters. St. Andrews is policed by three RCMP officers posted in the town.
