Saint John

The downtown of Saint John, New Brunswick’s oldest city, is located between one half hour and one-hour and fifteen minutes from most of the Charlotte Coastal Region. The greater Saint John area, with a population of approximately 125,000, is the largest city in New Brunswick. The Charlotte Coastal Region’s proximity to Saint John allows residents and businesses to enjoy the services and amenities of a much larger cosmopolitan centre nearby.

Arts, cultural and entertainment facilities in Saint John include the region’s civic centre, Harbour Station, as well as the beautifully restored Imperial Theatre, the Irving Nature Park and Rockwood Park. Saint John is home to a number of art galleries and the Saint John City Market which is over 200 years old, and also offers the shopping opportunities, entertainment and medical facilities you would expect in New Brunswick’s largest city.

Saint John is the industrial and financial heart of New Brunswick and is known widely as the Energy Hub of Atlantic Canada and a major manufacturing centre. Saint John is also home to a branch of the University of New Brunswick with approximately 3,000 students, as well as a New Brunswick Community College campus.

Fredericton

Fredericton, New Brunswick’s capital city, is situated along the scenic St. John River about one hour and thirty minutes from most of the Charlotte Coastal Region. The greater Fredericton area is home to a population of 81,355. Victorian homes and magnificent scenery, along with the rich cultural heritage of Fredericton, make the city a popular tourist destination.

From a cultural perspective, the city of Fredericton offers the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the Fredericton Playhouse (the home of Theatre NB), and activities associated with the university. The well-known Boyce Farmer’s Market offers a unique social and shopping experience on Saturdays and the city also has a diverse retail sector.

One of the oldest English speaking universities in North America, the University of New Brunswick, was established in 1785. The Fredericton campus is home to nearly 8,000 full-time students and offers bachelor degrees in arts, science and business with specialty degrees in engineering, law, forestry, computer science, kinesiology, nursing and education. In addition to being a university and government town, Fredericton is also home to a growing knowledge sector. Camp Gagetown, the largest Canadian Forces Training Base in Canada is located in Oromocto, just 20 minutes from downtown Fredericton.
