Blacks Harbour

With a population of 952 (2006 Census), the Village of Blacks Harbour, which is part fishing village, part company town, is unique among the communities in the Charlotte Coastal Region. Blacks Harbour is mainly known as home of Connors Bros., the largest canner of sardines in the world. The village plays a growing role in the aquaculture industry with the recent addition of Cooke Aquaculture facilities. In addition, Blacks Harbour is the departure and arrival point for those traveling to or from the island of Grand Manan.

Blacks Harbour is a quiet village. The village has an elementary school serving 164 students in kindergarten to grade 6. The Fundy Health Centre, located on the same premises as the Fundy Nursing Home, provides daily twelve-hour emergency care and primary health care for the communities of Blacks Harbour, St. George and the surrounding areas. The facility has four 48-hour observation beds. The facility is served by two nurse practitioners and provides basic diagnostic and rehabilitation services on site. Visiting specialists and other health professionals provide clinics on a regular basis. The Atlantic Health Science Centre, the major medical facility in New Brunswick, is located in Saint John about a forty five-minute drive from Blacks Harbour.

Blacks Harbour has several parks and playgrounds for residents and visitors to enjoy. It is home to the Fundy Arena and the Brunswick Curling Club.

The village has Wesleyan, United Pentecostal, United Baptist and Roman Catholic churches.

Housing in the village is generally modest to mid-level and very reasonably priced. Municipal water and sewerage service is available to homes and businesses.

The village is served by a variety of retail outlets including a convenience store, a supermarket, a restaurant, a building materials/hardware store, and a gift shop. There are daycare services for children, a hair design studio, and a nursing home in the village.
